PHOENIX — Surprise has opened the application process for finding its next police chief, the city announced Wednesday.

The West Valley city is looking to replace Terry Young, who was promoted to assistant city manager in January.

Young told KTAR News 92.3 FM that Surprise is searching for a strong communicator who can inspire and motivate within the community.

“We know we’re going to have a very talented group of applicants,” Young said. “What we’re looking for is experience in a rapidly growing community.”

Young added that Surprise’s growth — he said the city is expected to gain 6,000 residents per year over the next 10 years — will require a leader who can handle the demands of a growing city and department.

The Surprise Police Department currently has 154 officers, according to Young, and will continue to add positions as more people flock to the city.

Assistant Police Chief Geoffrey Leggett is serving at interim police chief until Young’s replacement is selected.

Young expects a new chief to be chosen sometime in May. Applications will remain open until March 23.
