PHOENIX – Authorities are encouraging shoppers to thoroughly inspect their used purchases after a Phoenix family took home a snuggly toy stuffed with dangerous drugs.

Parents who bought a glow worm at an El Mirage thrift store were cleaning the toy when they discovered a baggie filled with pills hidden inside, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune of the Phoenix Police Department told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

“There were over 5,000 pills inside that bag,” Fortune said.

The parents reported their discovery to police, who said they believe the pills are fentanyl.

“They’re very dangerous,” Fortune said. “Very small amounts of fentanyl can end someone’s life.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 100 times stronger than morphine.

Fortune lauded the parents for checking the glow worm closely and said it’s always good to inspect toys for potential dangers.

“It might not just be pills or anything illegal, but it might be something sharp or might be something else that could hurt the kids,” she said.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Ali Vetnar contributed to this report.
