PHOENIX – A 1-year-old girl taken by her noncustodial father in west Phoenix without permission is safe, and the man was detained, authorities said.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Saturday morning that Tyler Garbett took off with the child in the mother’s white 2009 Nissan Versa near Roeser Road and 71st Avenue just after 1 p.m. on Thursday.
The mother told authorities she gave Garbett and his brother a ride after visiting Garbett’s house. Garbett then asked if he could drive and the mother agreed. He told the mother he wanted to go check his mailbox and asked the mother to go grab the mail for him.
Once the mother got out of the car, Garbett made a U-turn and drove off with his brother and the child in the back seat, according to authorities.
The Phoenix Police Department just after 11 a.m. on Friday were dispatched to a hit-and-run with the run vehicle turning out to be the car Garbett took off in.
Police approached the vehicle and Garbett fled the scene with the child in his arms, according to authorities.
Officers detained Garbett with no further incident and the Phoenix Fire Department determined the child was unharmed.
Garbett’s brother was detained but later released.
Garbett is currently in custody and being held with a no bond status.
No other details were immediately available.
