PHOENIX – The University of Arizona has been tapped as the third state-run mass COVID-19 vaccination site, the first in southern Arizona, Gov. Doug Ducey announced Wednesday.
The Arizona Department of Health Services and Pima County Health Department will expand the capacity and operating hours at the existing Tucson university site, which has been open for students, faculty and staff to receive their shots, according to a press release.
The partnership will allow the site to eventually operate 24/7 as more vaccine doses arrive. It will be able serve up to 6,000 people per day at full capacity.
The upgrade to state-site status will add more appointments that will begin Feb. 18, with registration opening online at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Anyone without computer access or who needs help registering can call 1-844-542-8201.
“Our state vaccination sites at State Farm Stadium and Phoenix Municipal Stadium have been instrumental in Arizona’s work to vaccinate people quickly, efficiently and safely,” Ducey said in the release.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the University of Arizona and the Pima County Health Department to open a site in southern Arizona and rapidly expand vaccine distribution.”
During a virtual tour of State Farm Stadium with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday, State Health Services Director Dr. Cara Christ revealed that another stat-run site would open in Pima County soon.
“Demand for the vaccine remains high, and the state’s third vaccination site and first in southern Arizona will help meet that demand,” Christ said in Wednesday’s press release.
State Farm Stadium in Glendale opened for 24/7 vaccine service Jan. 11. Phoenix Municipal Stadium followed as a daytime-only site Feb. 1. Both have the capacity to give 12,000 shots per day but are operating below that level while vaccine remains in short supply.
