PHOENIX – One person was killed and another injured in a wrong-way accident on a Phoenix-area freeway early Wednesday, authorities said.

The 12:30 a.m. wreck shut down westbound Interstate 10 near Chandler Boulevard in Chandler. Transition ramps on Loop 202 to I-10 were also closed.

Sgt. Kameron Lee with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said several callers alerted troopers to the wrong-way driver, who was heading east in the west lanes near Ray Road in a silver sedan.

Eventually, the car smashed into another vehicle. The driver of the other car was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wrong-way driver, a 25-year-old woman from Phoenix, suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover.

A third driver, whose car was struck by debris, was unharmed.

The freeway reopened around 6 a.m.
