PHOENIX — Mesa police shot and killed a man after being called to a disturbance involving the man making suicidal threats, according to authorities.
Police were called to an apartment complex around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night near the intersection of Broadway and Dobson roads in Mesa in response to 23-year-old Keenan Sailer, who called the mental health crisis line.
When police arrived, they learned that a toddler and an infant were in the apartment with Sailer.
After hanging up on the call, Sailer walked outside of his apartment with a gun, police said.
When police demanded Sailer drop the weapon, he did not comply, authorities said.
According to police, non-lethal rounds were used by police before using lethal rounds.
Sailer was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the children were unharmed and returned to their family, authorities said.
No other information was made immediately available.
It was the second officer-involved shooting in the Valley on Saturday.
It was also the first officer-involved shooting involving the Mesa Police Department this year and ninth overall by Valley law enforcement, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
