PHOENIX — Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers underwent successful quintuple heart bypass surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, his office said Thursday in a statement.
Doctors expect to release Weiers within the next week.
He visited an urgent care center Monday with “health concerns” before being transported to a hospital.
“I can’t thank everyone enough for all the messages to both Sandy and I, wishing me all the best throughout this tough situation,” Weiers said in the statement. “I am also grateful for the surgeons and medical staff here as they have done an excellent job every step of the way.”
Vice Mayor Ian Hugh is serving as mayor until Weiers returns to work, as prescribed under city charter.
Weiers was elected to a third four-year term last year. He previously served four terms in the Arizona House of Representatives.
