We should take the same fun approach to life as our kids

Kids are cool. Way cool. Cooler than us, in fact.

My kids are two of my most favorite people on the planet and, although I am biased since I gave them life and all, I prefer their company over most people.

Yeah, sure, they spit up on themselves, have meltdowns that give Linda Blair a run for her money and sometimes have trouble with the whole concept of indoor plumbing, but overall, they rock. You wanna know why? Here’s a quick recap of the coolest human beings on Earth:

They have no filters, no screens telling them not to say silly things or not talk complete gibberish. They laugh at knock-knock jokes, most of the time before the punchline.

They play in dirt. They love dirt! They would make dirt angels if they could. They play in the rain — sometimes at the same time as the dirt.

They smile at complete strangers. They get pumped to check the mail. They want to roll down the windows and play outside when it’s 130 degrees in the shade.

They are completely entertained with an empty cardboard box. They are totally fine leaving the house in their pajamas.

They could eat Eggos for breakfast, lunch and dinner and be satisfied. A tiny sticker totally negates any ill will towards a doctor who just poked them in the leg with a needle.

Whereas us adults think about every consequence. What if I say hi and smile at that person in the grocery store and they don’t say hi back? If I go out in the rain, will my makeup run? What would people think of me if I went out in public in my pajamas? Ugh, I better check the mail. Where did this dirt come from?

Think how great it would be if we had the same disposition, If you saw someone with a frown and you walked up to them, covered your face with your hands and then yelled “peek a BOO!” with a huge smile on your face. No wonder kids are so happy (most of the time). All it takes is driving past a garbage truck and the worst problem in the world suddenly disappears faster than Keyser Soze in “Usual Suspects.”

Kids don’t think one second past the moment they are in. And most of them are so happy that the happiness actually seems as though it might bubble over anytime.

If you ask me, that is about the best way you can live. We don’t know anything about the next moment and, most importantly it’s really not up to us anyways. Life is one big roller coaster. Some highs, some lows and then some plateaus.

Let’s take a hint from these little nuggets and do what they would do: Take a deep breath, put both your hands in the air as high as you can (don’t think about your hair getting messed up) and enjoy the ride.
