PHOENIX – The mayor of the West Valley’s largest suburb was hospitalized this week and will undergo heart bypass surgery, the city of Glendale announced Wednesday.
Mayor Jerry Weiers’ surgery is scheduled for Thursday, the city said in a press release. The release said he is expected to make a full recovery.
He visited an urgent care center Monday with “health concerns” before being transported to a hospital, according to the release.
“I appreciate all of the heartfelt messages from everyone offering their thoughts and prayers and for their willingness to assist [wife] Sandy and I during this time,” Weiers said in the release.

“I have witnessed firsthand the conditions our health care workers are working in due to the pandemic, and I can’t thank them enough for their dedication and commitment to our communities.”
Vice Mayor Ian Hugh will serve as mayor until Weiers returns to work, as prescribed under city charter.
Weiers was elected to a third four-year term last year. He previously served four terms in the Arizona House of
Representatives.
