PHOENIX — The ALS Association Arizona Chapter has received a $10,000 donation from Thunderbirds Charities, the association announced Monday.
The donation will benefit the chapter’s Living with ALS program, which provides services to people with ALS and their families to help maintain a high quality of life.
Specifically, the funds will be used to support medical clinics, support groups, family counseling, social group activities and family activity kits.
“We are so grateful for this incredibly generous gift from Thunderbirds Charities,” Taryn Norley, president and CEO of the ALS Association Arizona Chapter, said in a press release.
“This donation will allow us to continue to invest in the more than 600 Arizona families who are affected by ALS.”
The average expenses for those living with ALS average $200,000 annually, according to the release.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. There is currently no known cause or cure for the disease.
According to the chapter’s website, over 5,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year.
