PHOENIX — The defense of convicted killer Jodi Arias cost Maricopa County taxpayers nearly $3.5 million over the past several years.
Richard de Uriarte with the Maricopa County Board Supervisors said defense costs totaled $3,465,304.94 as of Monday, when Arias was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The prosecution’s bill sat at a paltry $133,000, though that did not include prosecutors’ salaries, payable by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
The total could rise, de Uriarte said. More invoices are pending while others could still be submitted.
Arias was convicted of murdering Travis Alexander in 2013. Since then, two juries failed to sentence her, forcing Judge Sherry Stephens to decide her fate.
One of Arias’ attorneys said the murderess will appeal Stephens’ ruling.
