PHOENIX — A new sign installation along Pinnacle Peak and Cave Creek roads aims to honor Arizona’s recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military medal.
The Arizona Medal of Honor Row features 37 signs representing each individual with ties to the state who has been awarded the medal for an act of valor while in service.
The signs were installed in early January near the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, according to the city of Phoenix.
“The Medal of Honor recognizes our country’s most valiant men and women, with 37 of these honorees having ties to our state,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said in a press release.
“This signage installation helps to bring awareness to these local heroes so that their sacrifices may never be forgotten.”
Phoenix resident Archie Dicksion first came up with the idea for the signs and shared the concept with city councilman Jim Waring of District 2, the city said.
“Arizona throughout its history has had individuals that have stood head and shoulders above others in protecting those around them,” Dicksion said in the release. “So that others may know their deeds, we dedicate this row to them.”
