PHOENX — Construction on a light rail extension project in Phoenix will affect service during parts of February and March.

Crews will build new track connections on the South Central extension/downtown hub light rail project, temporarily closing some areas along the light rail system.

Work is scheduled between Feb. 13-26 at the intersections of Fifth and Washington streets, and Central Avenue and McKinley Street.

During that time, the eastbound and westbound trains will alternate travel on a single track in downtown Phoenix and arrive every 30 minutes.

Riders will be able to board and exit both directions of the light rail at three stations: Van Buren Street and First Avenue, Jefferson Street and First Avenue, and Jefferson Street and Third Avenue.

The platforms at Van Buren Street and Central Avenue, Washington Street and Central Avenue, and Washington and Third streets will be closed during the construction.

Between March 13-26, work scheduled at the intersections of Jefferson and Fifth streets and McKinley Street and First Avenue will again limit the light rail to a single track.

The platforms at Van Buren Street and First Avenue, Jefferson Street and First Avenue, and Jefferson Street and Third Avenue will be closed during that time.

Passengers will be able to board and exit the light rail at Van Buren Street and Central Avenue, Washington Street and Central Avenue, and Washington and Third streets.

Valley Metro’s 5.5-mile project, which will connect south Phoenix with the downtown corridor, is estimated to cost $1.35 billion.
