Man shot, killed by Avondale police after suspected car theft

PHOENIX — A man was shot and killed Sunday evening in Avondale following a confrontation with officers outside of a Walgreens, authorities said.

Officers trailed Daniel Canales, Jr. in a car that was suspected to be stolen to a Walgreens at Estrella Mountain Ranch, according to Avondale police.

When officers attempted to apprehend Canales, there was a struggle and the suspect was shot, police said.

Canales was transported to a local hospital, where he died.

No injuries were reported for the involved officers.

It was the first shooting of the year involving Avondale police and fifth overall by Valley law enforcement, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
