PHOENIX — A new ranking by SmartAsset has placed Scottsdale as the No. 1 city in the nation to work from home.

Three other Arizona cities cracked the list with Gilbert at No. 4, Chandler at No. 11 and Mesa at No. 26.

Scottsdale ranked in the top five of four of the metrics the survey used.

Data from the 100 largest U.S. cities was evaluated and ranked based on seven metrics: percentage of the workforce who worked from home in 2019, estimated percentage of the workforce who can work from home, five-year change in percentage of the workers working from home, October 2020 unemployment rate, poverty rate, housing costs as a percentage of earnings and percentage of residences with two or more bedrooms.

Nearly 17.9% of Scottsdale’s workforce worked from home in 2019, up 6.7% from 2014. According to SmartAsset’s report, that is the highest percentage of any city on the list.

Scottsdale has the fourth-highest estimated percentage of the workforce who can work from home at about 37%. The city also has the third-lowest poverty rate (6%).

Gilbert ranked highly in the housing metrics with more space for workers to set up a dedicated office. According to Census Bureau data, 96.3% of the East Valley town residences have two or more bedrooms.

Of Gilbert’s total workforce, 9.5% worked remotely in 2019.

Nationally, North Carolina came in with the most top 10 cities: Raleigh (No. 2), Durham (No. 6) and Charlotte (No. 7). Texas and Arizona were the next best states with two cities each.
