PHOENIX – Portions of the popular Arizona Canal jogging and biking trail will be closed over the next month for annual canal maintenance, including water drainage, authorities said.

Canal closures will span Phoenix between Seventh Street and 43rd Avenue from Friday until Feb. 7. Signs will indicate where the trails are off limits to all traffic, including bikes and pedestrians, according to a Salt River Project press release.

Some customers won’t be able to get water for irrigations when the canals are drained, said SRP, which operates the Valley’s 131-mile canal system.

Crews will herd white amur fish Sunday-Tuesday for relocation. The fish provide vegetation control and will be distributed to areas in need of their services.

The Arizona Canal will also be closed until Jan. 22 in two segments on the east side, 56th-48th streets and 32nd-24th streets, while crews power wash the canal lining to eliminate caddisfly larvae.

Adult caddisfly populations have been higher than usual and are causing a nuisance in area neighborhoods.
