PHOENIX — After surviving a near fatal head-on car crash, Phoenix Police Officer Chase McCance has a long road to recovery ahead of him.

“Most people that are involved in those kind of wrecks, unfortunately they don’t make it, but thank goodness Chase did,” Britt London, president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, said on KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show on Tuesday.

Authorities say on Jan. 1 around 6:30 a.m., McCance was traveling westbound on Cactus Road from 28th Street when his patrol vehicle was struck by a driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes.

London said the officer is doing OK and expected to survive, but will face more surgeries and time in the hospital.

To help McCance and his family with expenses, the association’s charity arm has begun collecting donations.

“The community is wonderful when they come to our aid in these situations,” London said.

Donations can be made online by selecting “Officer Support” and filling in McCance’s name on the donation. All of the money collected will go directly to the officer and his family.

Police later identified the wrong-way driver as 22-year-old Dylan Johnson, who was booked on aggravated assault DUI.

The investigation is ongoing.
