PHOENIX — The city of Mesa will be hosting its MLK Day parade virtually this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mesa’s virtual parade will happen on the Jan. 18 holiday and the city is providing multiple ways for residents to get involved.
The city is partnering with the Mesa MLK Celebrating Committee for the Mesa Digital Photo Parade.
Past participants are being asked to submit a photo online and residents can take a photo or video responding to the prompt, “How am I/we living the dream?”
Mesa will display the responses on its website and social media on the holiday.
Also, the Mesa MLK Celebration Committee will be joining with AZPBS to air a three-part documentary series based on the “I Have a Dream” speech beginning at 5 p.m.
The documentary will be combined with performing artists and other features celebrating Dr. King.
It will be followed by a Facebook Live panel discussion featuring community leaders and historians.
The cities of Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Phoenix, Gilbert and Scottsdale will all participate in the discussion.
