PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix shot and killed a man they said mimicked pointing a weapon at them Monday night.

Officers had gone to an apartment near 27th and Glendale avenues, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said in an email late Tuesday morning, after a woman called around 8:45 p.m. to report her ex-boyfriend was on her patio.

Four officers found the 30-year-old man, who told them he had a gun as he walked into the street, ignoring their commands to take his hands from the back of his pants.

The man walked backward into the street and once he crossed to the other side, he shouted at police, asking who was going to be killed that night. He turned around and angled his hands in their direction; the officers fired.

No other gun was found at the site, police said.

Fortune said the officers were a 28-year-old with four years of service; two 25-year-olds, with one year of service and the other less than a year; a 26-year-old with four years of service; and a 28-year-old with two years of service.

It was the police department’s second shooting of the day. Shortly after midnight, officers fatally shot a 47-year-old woman who pointed a gun at them, they said, near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road.

Overall, it was the 26th shooting involving the Phoenix Police Department this year, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
