Arizona’s unique New Year’s Eve drops go virtual amid coronavirus

PHOENIX — Three Arizona cities that drop unique items to ring in the new year will host the celebrations online to avoid large crowds gathering amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The cowboy boot in Prescott, the pine cone in Flagstaff and the deuce of clubs playing card in Show Low will all be dropped online, the various cities announced.
Prescott will “Give 2020 the Boot!” on YouTube and the local Prescott Channel 64 at 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m with a 30-minute program each, according to the official website.
Show Low will also broadcast the deuce of clubs drop on it’s Facebook page at 11:30 p.m., with fireworks capping off the evening.

Flagstaff, meanwhile, will debut a video of the pinecone dropping online on Dec. 31., instructing people on how to create their own traditional pinecone drop New Year’s Eve celebration at home.
The Arizona New Year’s Eve drops going online follow the lead of other similar celebrations across the country, including the popular ball drop in New York City that will also be presented virtually.
