Sen. Kelly speaks with Gov. Ducey, asks for more COVID-19 mitigation

PHOENIX — U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona spoke with Gov. Doug Ducey on Tuesday to discuss rising coronavirus cases and hospitalizations and the Democrat senator’s desire for increased mitigation strategies in the state.
“Today, Gov. Ducey and I spoke about how we’re combatting the virus in Arizona, including vaccine distribution in the state and the strain that rising COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are putting on our health care system,” Kelly said in a statement.
“I reiterated my support for additional mitigation efforts to slow the spread of the virus, including what I have heard from mayors about ensuring they have the tools to protect their communities and additional staffing needs in Arizona’s hospitals.”

Kelly is one of few Democratic leaders in the state who have said they’ve recently spoken with the Republican Ducey regarding the state’s handling of the pandemic.

Fellow Democratic U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema and Arizona mayors such as Phoenix’s Kate Gallego and Tucson’s Regina Romero have also called for stronger mitigation tactics but said they haven’t spoken with Ducey.
Kelly added that Ducey discussed plans for distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in Arizona, progress on a virus relief bill and other topics such as the economy.
“This week, I am continuing to work with both Republicans and Democrats to find a compromise on additional COVID-19 relief for Arizona, and as we navigate this crisis and beyond I look forward to speaking often with Gov. Ducey about ways we can work together for Arizona,” Kelly said.
