Boy crossing street in Phoenix hit by car, dies in hospital

PHOENIX – A child hit by a car while crossing a street in Phoenix died in the hospital, police said Thursday.
Matthew Calles, 9, was walking near 36th Street and Thomas Road around 6 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck outside the crosswalk.
First responders from the Phoenix Fire Department took him to the hospital in critical condition.
Police said the driver showed no sign of impairment and stayed at the scene to talk with investigators.
No other details were made available.
