PHOENIX — St. Mary’s Food Bank is in need of more than 6,500 turkeys to reach its donation goal ahead of Thanksgiving.

The Phoenix-based nonprofit is hoping for a total of 12,000 donated turkeys before distributing its holiday food boxes during the three days leading up to Thanksgiving.

St. Mary’s will get assistance from Desert Financial Credit Union, which pledged Wednesday to match all donations at this weekend’s Super Saturday Turkey Drive.

The credit union will also match turkey donations at drive-up donation areas on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

“This has been a very challenging year for the food bank. This announcement has us all breathing a little easier about next week,” St. Mary’s spokesman Jerry Brown said in a press release.

“We should reach our goal if we have a good super Saturday.”

Albertsons and Safeway also plan to match the first 1,000 turkeys donated Saturday.

The turkey drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at food bank locations in Phoenix (3131 W. Thomas Road) and Surprise (13050 W. Elm Street).

Donors can also drop off turkeys at 19 metro Phoenix Albertsons and Safeway locations.

All staff members and volunteers will be required to wear masks, gloves and follow other social distancing protocols.
