PHOENIX — Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition after she suffered a head injury earlier this week, officials said Friday.
Adel was responding well to medical treatment, spokeswoman Jennifer Liewer said in a press release.
Liewer said Adel recently fell at home and hit her head. Adel’s conditioned worsened by Tuesday evening and she was rushed to a local hospital.
The Republican underwent emergency surgery to address bleeding in her brain.
Adel led Julie Gunnigle in the race for the attorney position in the latest vote count from the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office.
Adel, appointed to the post in late 2019 to fill the vacancy created when Bill Montgomery was named to the Arizona Supreme Court, led the Democrat Gunnigle by about 20,000 votes.
Gunnigle has offered her support for her opponent since learning of her condition.
Liewer said MCAO has been prepared to continue working in Adel’s absence.
“The team Allister put into place over the past year continues to move forward with the important work of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office,” Liewer said.
