PHOENIX — A new flight plan from southern California to Phoenix will be making its debut next year.

Spirit Airlines announced on Thursday that a new flight from John Wayne Airport in Orange County to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport will be available starting Jan. 6.

“We’ve wanted to bring More Go to Orange County for a long time now, and we appreciate the airport giving us an opportunity to expand so quickly,” Spirit Airlines Vice President of Network Planning John Kirby said in a press release.

“People are ready to travel again, and we are excited to expand our service portfolio from John Wayne with new nonstops to Phoenix and expanded service to Las Vegas, giving our guests more access to low fares on the West Coast.”

The expansion to Phoenix — in addition to Las Vegas — was made possible after Orange County awarded the airline additional takeoff and landing rights for 2021, according to the release.

Spirit’s COVID-19 protocols require all guests and team members to wear a facial covering at all times.

According to the release, every plane in the airline’s Fit Fleet uses a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter that captures 99.97% of particles and filters the air for contaminants every three minutes.

Between flights, Spirit also uses two EPA-registered fogging treatments.

The first applies a disinfectant against coronaviruses, while the second is “an antimicrobial product that forms an invisible barrier on all surfaces that kills bacteria and viruses on contact for 30 days.”

John Wayne Airport will become the newest place on Spirit’s travel map once the airline launches its flights to Las Vegas and Oakland on Nov. 17.

“It’s exciting that Spirit is adding new destinations from John Wayne Airport, Orange County,” John Wayne Airport Director Barry Rondinella said in the release.

“The addition of Phoenix and extra Las Vegas service to more than 20 nonstop destinations means even greater choice and convenience for our guests.”

We want to hear from you.
