PHOENIX — Avondale Fire and Medical will be receiving a new fire station in 2022.

The station will be the city’s fifth and was approved by the Avondale City Council on Monday night, according to a press release.

The new fire station will be located on 127th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

Construction is scheduled to commence in April 2021, with a planned completion date of February 2022.

The 19,000-square-foot facility will include three bays, office space and sleeping quarters, a kitchen and dining room, training room, exercise room and a community room for public service programs such as blood pressure checks, educational tours and school programs.

The total budget of the project is $12.5 million, $8.5 million of which will be funded via accumulated savings in the General Fund and $4 million from the Public Safety Sales Tax Fund.

Recruitment for the necessary personnel to staff the new Van Buren station has already begun.

In September, Avondale received a $3 million Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Administration in order to hire 14 new firefighters.

The grant period is from March 2021 through March 2024.

“As growth accelerates in the city, the council is especially mindful of keeping ahead of public safety needs in the community,” Avondale City Manager Charles Montoya said in the release.

“With new housing permits on the rise, as well as economic development expansion, Avondale Fire-Medical has identified the need for an additional fire station to serve the city.”
