PHOENIX – Phoenix police detained a 14-year-old boy Sunday they said tried to a rob a grocery store, fired shots inside then drove across town before he was found.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson said in an email Monday the teenager tried to go into a store near Carefree Highway and Interstate 17 around 9:15 p.m., but he couldn’t get inside because the doors were closed to new customers.
At least 12 shoppers were in the store.
The boy is accused of shooting out a glass door to break into the store. He then stepped through the opening, ordered staff and customers to get down on the floor and fired a shot overhead.
The teen shot a cash register after he failed to open one of them. He left the store and drove away. Gilbert police helped find the car near Germann and Stapley roads. The boy was taken into custody without incident, authorities said in the email.
The boy was booked on charges of attempted armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault and endangerment and was to be held in the Maricopa County Juvenile Court Center.
