Arizona voters rationalize support for Donald Trump, Joe Biden

Nov 2, 2020, 4:45 AM | Updated: 7:21 pm

PHOENIX — Arizona voters who support Republican President Donald Trump and those who back Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden offer a variety of reasons why they do so, ranging from the candidates’ personalities and political records.

Marie Coombs said she’s voting for Trump.

“He might not be smooth. He’s not a politician, and that’s exactly why I like him,” Coombs said. “And he did everything he said he was going to do.”

Coombs voted for Trump in 2016. She said despite the opposition the president received from Democrats in Congress, she believes “he got so much done.”

Meanwhile, Jenny Bogden said she can’t do four more years of a Trump administration and is voting for Biden.

“He’s so opposite of Trump,” she said, adding that Biden “has had a lifetime of public service” and can relate more to working Americans.

“You gotta go with someone who knows what it’s like to be an everyday American, not the top 1 percent of Americans,” Bogden said.

A poll released last week by OH Predictive Insights shows Biden had a slight lead over Trump. The former vice president had the support of 49% of likely Arizona voters to Trump’s 46%.

Biden is also “slightly favored” to win Arizona according to the poll aggregate site FiveThirtyEight.com. The site shows Biden is favored nationally to win the White House.

Angela Odoom said she thinks Trump “was doing a good job with the country” prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

“But this year, everything took a different turn,” she said. “I don’t think the current president took things seriously.”

She said the president’s handling of the pandemic influenced her decision to vote for Biden, whom she thinks “will do a better job.”

Josh Vornsand disagreed and said he believes Trump has the country “going in the right direction.”

“He’s not a politician, he’s a businessman,” he said. “And I think having a businessman running one of the most powerful countries in the world is what we need.”
