PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix fatally shot a man and found a woman and a child in a home who were seriously injured late Sunday.

The woman, 46, was pronounced dead at a hospital, and a 13-year-old boy was in critical condition, police said Monday. The nature of their injuries was not clear.

On Tuesday, police identified the deceased woman as Shannon Hersh and the deceased suspect as 53-year-old Paul Sarver.

Sarver and Hersh had been involved in a domestic relationship, authorities said.

The police shooting in a neighborhood near Interstate 17 and Jomax Road happened around 10 p.m.

Sgt. Maggie Cox told KTAR News 92.3 FM someone called police to report that a neighbor had come over and asked to borrow a gun to kill himself.

“Another call, which we believe was the suspect calling in, said police need to come but was very evasive about what was actually occurring,” Cox said.

Two officers arrived at the scene and headed for the home, Cox said. Sarver came out from behind a vehicle parked in the driveway and began walking toward them, saying he had a gun.

When he pointed the object at the officers, the officers fired, Cox said.

Authorities later found a hard case for eyeglasses next to the suspect, she said.

The couple had another another child, an 11-year-old girl, who was at a neighbor’s during the incident.

Neither officer, both men, was injured. One is a 40-year-old with a year of service and the other a 22-year-old with two years of service.

It was the 20th officer-involved shooting of the year for Phoenix police, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
