PHOENIX – With a full-floor confirmation vote expected next week, U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona said she spoke with Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett on Friday.
But unlike her Republican counterpart, the Democrat didn’t reveal which way she would vote.
“As I promised Arizonans, I am carefully considering whether this nominee is professionally qualified, believes in the role of an independent judiciary, and can be trusted to faithfully interpret and uphold the rule of law,” Sinema said in a press release.
On Tuesday, a day before meeting with Barrett in Washington, Sen. Martha McSally (R-Arizona) posted a video saying she would vote yes for President Donald Trump’s pick.
McSally’s support came as no surprise with the GOP-led Senate attempting to push through Barrett’s nomination and cement a conservative majority on the court before Election Day.
Democrats mounted time-consuming procedural hurdles Friday, but the party has no realistic chance of stopping Barrett’s advance.
The federal appeals court judge is expected to be confirmed Monday and quickly join the court.
Trump nominated Barrett to fill the seat that opened when Justice Ruth Ginsburg died in September.
