PHOENIX — The Horse Fire burning 18 miles south of Prescott that forced the evacuation of the nearby Crown King community grew slightly to 8,950 acres as of Sunday morning.

While the blaze is still 0% contained, according to a press release, the growth rate has improved compared to previous reports on the fire.

The Horse Fire, which started on Thursday, grew from 3,500 acres to 8,300 acres on Friday.

Evacuations remain in effect for communities of Crown King, Minnehaha, Horsethief Cabins and any other areas in and around the fire area.

A shelter has been set up at Mayer High in Spring Valley, along Arizona State Route 69 near Interstate 17.

All roads leading into Crown King have also been closed.

Air tankers and helicopters continued working to slow the spread of the fire while firefighters on the ground worked on structure protection near the affected area.

The wildfire is currently in a remote section of forest with steep, rugged terrain, according to the release.
