PHOENIX – A wildfire burning north of Phoenix grew from 3,500 acres to 8,300 on Friday and was 0% contained as of 6 p.m.

The Horse Fire began blazing in a remote, rugged section of Prescott National Forest early Thursday afternoon, a forest spokeswoman said in a press release.

The fire forced evacuations from the nearby Crown King community, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said Friday morning. The community is about six miles north of the fire and 18 miles south of Prescott.

U.S. Forest Service officials said the fire was burning through juniper and chaparral and that aircraft and at least seven ground crews had been assigned to attack the flames.

All roads leading into Crown King were shut down.

A shelter was set up at Mayer High in Spring Valley, along Arizona State Route 69 near Interstate 17.
