PHOENIX – Interim Tempe Police Chief Jeff Glover will be sworn into office during Thursday’s Tempe City Council meeting.

Glover’s first day on the job was Monday, but he will officially take his oath of office during the city manager’s announcements portion of the agenda.

He retired from the Tempe Police Department after a 20-year career but will take over for Tempe Police Chief Sylvia Moir, who resigned in September.

Glover will also the East Valley city’s first Black police chief.

His interim role is expected to last through October 2021. Next year, Tempe City Manager Andrew Ching will lead a process to hire a permanent chief. Glover could be considered for the permanent role, according to his current agreement.

Glover started his police career as a Mesa patrol officer in 1998 and joined the Tempe force the next year.

His duties included four years as commander over the department’s Professional Standards Bureau, Organizational Services Division, Criminal/Special Investigations and SWAT.

The meeting will start at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on the city of Tempe’s website.
