PHOENIX — The long-standing heat dome that has built up over Arizona during the last four months appears set to give up.

That’s the outlook from the National Weather Service’s Phoenix office, at least, as the Valley will see cooler high temperatures by week’s end.

The high temperature in Phoenix hit 102 Thursday and is expected to drop to 98 on Friday and 89 by Monday, with no additional 100-degree days in the forecast.

Thursday’s high temperature was the 141st 100-degree day of the year, two shy of the all-time record, which was set in 1989.

Phoenix previously set a record for most consecutive 105-degree days in October with five in a row. The city experienced its hottest meteorological summer on record in 2020, running from June, July and August.

Between June and August, Phoenix reported 50 days with a high temperature of at least 110 degrees, surpassing the record of 33 days set in 2011.

The average high in Phoenix in mid-October is between 91 and 92 degrees, the weather bureau said.

The latest 100-degree day in Phoenix’s history is Oct. 27, set in 2016.

The average last day of 100-degree highs in the Valley is Oct. 3, meaning the heat has overstayed its welcome for the year.
