US Attorney seeks death penalty in slaying of Tucson US Marshal

Oct 6, 2020, 4:05 AM

PHOENIX – The United States Attorney’s Office filed an amended Notice of Intent to seek the death penalty in the case of a Tucson man who allegedly killed a U.S. Marshal in 2018.

U.S. Attorney Michael Bailey announced his office is seeking the death sentence for Ryan Phillip Schlesinger, who is facing charges of first-degree murder of a federal officer and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence resulting in death.

On Nov. 29, 2018, deputies with the United States Marshals Service were attempting to serve a felony search warrant on for Schlesinger at his Tucson residence for allegedly stalking a Tucson police officer.

As agents were attempting to serve the warrant, Schlesinger allegedly began shooting at officers and killed Deputy U.S. Marshal Chase White.

Schlesinger was taken into custody after an hour standoff with law enforcement.

Schlesinger, who was 18 years old at the time of the incident, was indicted on 13 counts in December 2018. On Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office filed a superseding indictment against Schlesinger.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on the new indictment on Oct. 22 before Magistrate Judge D. Thomas Ferraro.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the matter.
