President Donald Trump briefly leaves hospital to thank supporters

Despite still receiving treatment at the Walter Reed Medical Center, President Donald Trump briefly left the hospital to drive by supporters.

In a video posted to Twitter, Trump thanked the doctors and nurses at the hospital for helping him with his treatment. He also teased that he would be visiting supporters.

“I also think we’re going to pay a little surprise to some of the great patriots that we have out on the street, and they’ve been out there for a long time, and they’ve got Trump flags and they love our country,” Trump said.

Trump’s motorcade briefly drove past supporters who have been outside the Walter Reed Medical Center. Trump remained in the vehicle while wearing a mask. Afterwards, he returned to his suite at the hospital.

“Appropriate precautions were taken in the execution of this movement to protect the president and all those supporting it, including PPE,” White House spokesman Judd Deere told pool reporters. “The movement was cleared by the medical team as safe to do.”

Trump also added that he’s “learned a lot about COVID” during his time at the hospital.

“I get it and I understand it and it’s a very interesting thing and I’m going to be letting you know about it,” Trump said.

Trump revealed late Thursday that he and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for coronavirus. On Friday, he traveled to the Walter Reed Medical Center as a precaution.

Trump’s team said Sunday that Trump received oxygen at the White House on Friday. They were not clear on whether he received any Saturday.

The additional details emerged after White House chief of staff Mark Meadows on Saturday said some of Trump’s vital signs were “very concerning” Friday. That disclosure contradicted a rosy assessment Trump’s doctors had initially provided.

Along with a steroid, Trump has been treated with two experimental drugs, a drug that Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. is testing to supply antibodies and a five-day course of remdesivir, doctors said.

Trump’s team said Sunday that Trump is “up and around” and doing well. They said if things continue to go well, Trump will be able to return to the White House on Monday to continue his treatment.
