PHOENIX — When calling over the phone is not an option, Pinal County residents will still be able to contact police.

The sheriff’s office introduced a text-to-911 system on Thursday that allows those in need to reach emergency services.

This service is intended for a variety of situations.

During an emergency in which it is not safe for the person to call 9-1-1, texting will allow them to access the department. If a person is undergoing a medical condition that leaves them incapable of speaking, this is also available.

Additionally, those who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or have a speech impediment can use it for ease.

To use the system, type 911 into the “to” field. In the body of the text, provide your exact location and the nature of the emergency. The sheriff’s department said to avoid text abbreviations and slang.

Photos and videos cannot be sent using this service.

The department warned not to text while driving.

“Having the option to text our 911 operators will help us ensure all residents have access to emergency services, no matter what the situation” sheriff Mark Lamb said in a statement. “Call if you can, text if you can’t.”

We want to hear from you.
