PHOENIX — A man armed with a bladed weapon was shot by police in Phoenix and hospitalized Wednesday night, according to authorities.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said in email Thursday officers responded to a report of a man who was “acting violently” damaging property near 44th Street and Camelback Road around 7 p.m.

An officer responded and found the suspect walking down the bank of a nearby canal. The officer chased the 38-year-old suspect, who ended up lying down in the canal ditch.

Initially, police thought the suspect had a knife in his hand, but later identified the weapon as a pruning saw.

He was given repeated commands to not approach the officer and to drop the weapon.

When he stood up and advanced toward the sergeant, a 16-year veteran of the force, she shot him in the lower body.

His injuries were serious but not life threatening.

Additional officers responded and applied medical aid to the suspect, who was taken to a hospital.

No officers were injured in the incident, according to authorities.

The investigation is ongoing.

It was the 15th Phoenix police involved shooting this year, per KTAR News 92.3 FM tracking.
