PHOENIX — A young child was hospitalized in critical condition after a drowning incident in a Mesa backyard pool Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The child regained pulse and respiration while being taken to the hospital, according to the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.

People at the scene told responders they found the child unresponsive in the pool.

No further update on the child’s condition was available.

MFMD said it responded to a drowning call near Stapley Drive and McKellips Road around 1 p.m.

Dispatchers provided CPR instructions while rescuers were on their way to the home.

The child, who is under 2 years old, was in cardiac arrest when crews arrived, MFMD said.

Responders transported the child to a local children’s hospital while performing CPR, MFMD said.
