PHOENIX – Authorities said a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Arizona was stabbed Monday night before shooting and killing the assailant.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. east of Nogales, where the agent was patrolling on foot.
He was arresting a group of people in the country without documentation when one of the people attacked him with a knife, according to a Tuesday statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The agent was stabbed multiple times before fatally shooting the attacker, the statement said.
He was airlifted to a Nogales airport and then flown to a Tucson hospital, where he was treated for his wounds before being released.
No other information was immediately available.
The FBI is leading the investigation into the incident.
