Poll has Trump slightly behind Biden among 50-plus voters in Arizona

PHOENIX — A poll set to be released by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) found President Donald Trump is trailing Democratic challenger Joe Biden by a slim margin among voters age 50 and up in Arizona, according to a press release on Thursday.

The survey of 1,600 likely 2020 voters conducted between Aug. 30 and Sept. 8 by the bipartisan team of Benenson Strategy Group and GS Strategy Group has Biden leading Trump among the age group by one percent (49% to 48%).

The margin of error is 2.5% with a 95% level of confidence, according to the release.

The full survey, which includes voters age 18 and up, has Biden leading Trump in the state 48% to 47%.

Voters age 50 and up in Arizona represent an important demographic for the two candidates in their pursuit of the state as the group made up 58.1% of all voters in the 2016 election, according to the release.

The Pew Research Center found 51% of nationwide validated voters age 50 to 64 voted for Trump over Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

“Candidates who want to win in 2020 must talk about the issues that matter to voters 50 and over – like voting safely from home or in-person, preventing cuts to Social Security and Medicare and lowering prescription drug prices,” Alex Juarez, AARP Arizona’s communications director, said in the release.

“Most importantly, Arizonans are casting their ballots earlier than ever and candidates need to address their concerns now.”

It was also stated in the poll that Trump leads Biden 50% to 47% among men voters in Arizona, but trails the former Vice President among women voters 50% to 44%.

The full survey results are scheduled to be released on Tuesday.
