PHOENIX – Storms with strong winds in the East Valley knocked out power for thousands of residents Tuesday evening.

More than 2,500 SRP customers were without power around 6 p.m., but the majority had power restored by 7 p.m., according to the utility’s outage map.

A cold front pushing across the southeast portion of the state brought heavy winds and rainfall to the area.

The National Weather Service said there was hail near Lindsay and Pecos roads in Gilbert around 4:45 p.m. along with 0.3 inches of rain.

Mesa Gateway Airport reported winds upwards of 45 mph and heavy rain, which was reducing visibility for flights.

The rainfall comes after the metro Phoenix area experienced unseasonably high temperatures over the Labor Day weekend.

According to NWS, Phoenix broke a daily heat record for three consecutive days from Friday to Sunday. On Monday, the area was facing one of the hottest Labor Days on record, but the mercury topped out at 108 degrees.

The Valley will continue to see low temperatures in the mid-90s before climbing back to 101 degrees on Friday.

We want to hear from you.
