PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix said Monday they have charged the mother of a 3-year-old girl who was found dead in the family car with child abuse.
Tianna Jones had called officers to an apartment near Interstate 17 and Thunderbird Road around 4:30 p.m. Sunday to report she couldn’t find her daughter Delilah.
Investigators learned that Jones had fallen asleep for three hours. They determined the child managed to get out of the house and into the car.
Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said KTAR News 92.3 FM that Jones told them she searched for the girl before calling.
Police eventually found the little girl in the front seat of a parked car after Jones told them she didn’t know where her keys were.
The windows were rolled up, Fortune said.
The child was unresponsive and rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Phoenix reached a high of about 100 degrees Sunday.
Jones, 23, was charged on one count of child/vulnerable adult abuse.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner will determine cause of death.
