PHOENIX — A small plane with one occupant made an emergency landing and stopped upside down on a highway Friday just outside the entrance to Grand Canyon National Park, authorities said.
Minor injuries were reported for 24-year-old Andrew Dutzy after the single-engine Cessna Caravan made an emergency landing on Highway 64 about 2 miles north of Grand Canyon Airport at around 10:40 a.m.
The plane took off from the airport and was planning to land there before the engine died and wouldn’t restart, Dutzy told Coconino County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
The right wing of the plane struck a light pole upon landing, causing the plane to flip.
The incident temporarily shut down both sides of the highway in Tusayan.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate the crash.
