PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation released crash figures from 2019.
Data shows that the most common type of multi-vehicle accidents last year were rear-end crashes.
According to the report, 47,936 of the 111,090 crashes in 2019 were due to rear-end crashes.
“The best way to avoid causing a rear-end collision is to not speed and to leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you,” ADOT said in its release.
Left-turn crashes were the second-most common accounting for 18,903 accidents. Head-on crashes only accounted for 1.8% of accidents.
The total number of multi-vehicle crashes increased slightly from 108,326 in 2018.
Despite the increase in total crashes, there were fewer deaths in 2019 than the year before.
There were 982 deaths from car crashes last year. That’s less than the 1,011 fatalities in 2018, which was the first time in a decade there were more than 1,000 deaths from car crashes in the state.
Arizona recorded fewer than 1,000 fatalities each year from 2008 to 2017.
Before this, more than 1,000 people had died each year from 1999 to 2007.
There were 256 alcohol-related crashes that resulted in death in 2019, a decrease of five from the year before.
