PHOENIX — Cindy McCain narrated portions of a video that played at the Democratic National Convention in which Joe Biden’s bipartisanship and friendship with her late husband were highlighted.
The video began by contrasting the backgrounds and political views of McCain and Biden. The two eventually came to know each other when McCain was assigned to accompany Biden as a military aide during an overseas trip in the 1970s.
It wasn’t long before the two formed a life-long friendship and both families were frequently gathering for picnics at the Biden residence.
“They would just sit and joke — it was like a comedy show sometimes to watch the two of them,” Cindy McCain said.
In reference to the Democratic Party presidential nominee’s more than 30 years in the U.S. Senate, McCain’s widow praised Biden’s willingness to walk across the political aisle.
“It was a style of legislating a leadership that you don’t find much anymore,” she said.
The video concluded with a soundbite of the late McCain thanking Biden for his friendship:
“Thank you for your example in how to remain the same good guy that you were when you first got here. Most of all, for your friendship — my life and the lives of many have been enriched by it.”
