3 dead in crash that closes both directions of I-17 in north Phoenix

PHOENIX — Three people died Thursday evening in a crash that closed both directions of Interstate 17 in north Phoenix, authorities said.
Phoenix Fire Captain Rob McDade said the incident occurred on southbound I-17 near Dunlap Avenue.
Two additional patients were transported to a local hospital in serious condition, McDade said.
All traffic was being diverted off the highway at Dunlap, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
I-17 was closed from approximately 5:50 p.m. until at 9:22 p.m.

Prior to the crash, a truck towing a trailer came to a stop in the HOV lane southbound on I-17 at Dunlap due to mechanical issues, authorities said.
While the truck’s five occupants were standing between the truck and trailer, a car traveling in the HOV collided with the trailer.
