PHOENIX — Thunderbirds Charities announced recently that it awarded more than $3.8 million in grants to 43 nonprofits across the Valley during its spring 2020 funding cycle.

The Phoenix-based organization said in a press release Aug. 5 that the total amount donated was $3,816,500.

Of the 43 grants, two were for over $500,000, four were more than $300,000 and 12 were over $100,000.

Homeward Bound and Barrow Neurological Foundation received the two grants worth a combined $1.38 million.

The $538,000 grant going to Homeward Bound will help assist homeless families with children, while Barrow will put the $500,000 grant toward its emergency stroke unit No. 2.

“The impact we can make in our Arizona communities is far and away the most rewarding thing we do as hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix Open,” Thunderbirds Charities president Tim Wood said in the release.

“It’s an honor to be able to assist the missions of these wonderful Valley organizations and help improve the lives of our fellow Arizonans.”

Notable charities that were beneficiaries include Benevilla Volunteer Home Services for Seniors and Treasures 4 Teachers.

A grant worth $60,000 went to Benevilla Volunteer Home Services for Seniors.

The money will aid services for older adults in the West Valley that face the challenge of independent daily living while also taking precautions for COVID-19.

Services are completely free and include grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments and phone pals.

The $40,000 grant to Treasures 4 Teachers will benefit hundreds of teachers and students from Title 1 schools in metro Phoenix by dropping off truckloads of free school supplies. Each trip serves roughly 50 teachers and 1,500 students.

Most students at designated Title 1 schools live in low-income households and are less likely to have the necessary resources for learning.

Thunderbirds Charities’ fall 2020 funding cycle has already started and can be found on their website
