PHOENIX — Arizona set a record on Sunday afternoon and it’s not a good one.

The temperature in Phoenix climbed to 110 degrees for the 34th calendar day in 2020, according to the National Weather Service, breaking the record from 2011.

An Excessive Heat warning went into effect for Phoenix at 9 a.m. Sunday and is scheduled to last until Monday at 8 p.m. with temperatures expected to reach upwards of 114 degrees on Sunday and 112 degrees on Monday.

It seems likely the new record will be padded a bit with high temperatures above 110 degrees predicted for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tuesday’s scheduled high is 109 degrees.

The heatwave has been relentless during the summer of 2020, as July went into the record books as the hottest month in the city’s history.

The preliminary average temperature in July was 99 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, nearly a full degree hotter than the previous record.

Experts advise people stay hydrated, limit the amount of time outside and try to stay inside air-conditioned buildings during time of extreme heat and remember to check on elderly family members and neighbors.

Signs of heat-related illnesses can include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache and nausea.

The Salvation Army is reactivating its heat relief stations across the Valley to help combat the 110-plus temperatures.

A list of the heat relief stations being used can be found here.
