PHOENIX — A man died in the back of a police car Tuesday morning following his arrest in west Phoenix, authorities said.
Phoenix police said officers found 28-year-old Ramon Timothy Lopez unresponsive in the back of a cruiser after he was arrested near 51st Avenue and Indian School Road at about 10:30 a.m.
Lopez was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No cause of death has been determined, according to police.
Officers arrested Lopez after they were called to the area following reports of a man looking into vehicles and making obscene gestures.
When an officer attempted to approach Lopez at a convenience store, the suspect threw a drink in the officer’s face, police said.
Lopez then ran from officer, who was able to take the suspect to the ground, according to police.
Two other officers helped to subdue Lopez, who police said was acting erratically.
Officers used a leg restraint to keep Lopez from kicking, according to police.
No other details regarding the incident were immediately available.
